Fire Prevention and Safety Tips
(NC)—
• Make sure you have at least one working smoke alarm on each floor and outside of each bedroom, test them regularly and replace batteries every time you reset your clocks in the fall.
• Sketch out a floor plan for your home and create a fire escape plan that outlines the best escape routes in the event of a fire. Post your plan on the fridge and practice a fire drill at least once a year with everyone in the home.
• Never leave space heaters on when you leave home or go to bed, and keep them at least three feet away from anything that can burn.
• Don't overload wall outlets or run extension cords under carpets or across doorways.
• Don't allow debris to build up in chimneys and fireplaces.
• Never leave lit cigarettes, burning candles or food cooking on the stovetop unattended.
