What You May Not Know About Manufacturers in Clarington - Sheila Hall

February 4, 2009 - Updated: February 4, 2009

In the past few months the Clarington Board of Trade has contacted and visited over 80 businesses in Clarington's industrial sector in order to become more familiar with what is manufactured here and better understand the needs, concerns issues and opportunities facing the industrial sector. Through our Corporate Calling Program, we have discovered a variety of products and services that are produced right here in Clarington, ranging from a strong presence of steel fabrication to telecommunications construction & maintenance, from nuclear energy to solar energy, from auto recycling to chemical waste management and from the manufacturing of safety apparel to manufacturing of sunrooms, geothermal heat pumps, and patio furniture. Over half of Clarington's industrial sector consists of manufacturers and over 20% provide a service to the industrial sector or community such as land surveying and street light maintenance.

We at the Clarington Board of Trade recognize the importance of the industrial sector and its diversity as they play an important role in maintaining and strengthening our economy as manufacturing makes the largest direct contribution of any economic sector. As we build relationships with businesses in the industrial sector we increase our understanding of the various industries' strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities which will also help the Board of Trade Office of Economic Development understand what is required to attract new business to Clarington.

As we listen to what industrial sectors have to say, we are hearing that there is much interest to expand their business in the next five years and express interest in connecting with other local manufacturers which may lead to partnerships, diversity, product evolution and growth.

Because of the contribution of industrial business to the Municipality, Clarington stands at the forefront of Economic Development that enriches the quality of life, strengthens the economy and moves the community confidently ahead of the 21st century.
