Snow Day... Again - Greg Lewis

January 30, 2009 - Updated: January 30, 2009

After digging out the end of my driveway yet again this year I thought I would keep this week's blog short, as I may have to go shovel again soon!

As a homeowner after you get your driveway, walk, and sidewalk in front of your house clear, it is always a good idea to make the trek around your home while you are dressed for it. Try and clear any blocked downspouts and clear snow away from your basement window wells. This will help prevent water damage when it does finally start to thaw!

Keep shopping locally and believe in the Durham region and its continued success!

The other area to look at after a heavy snowfall is the roof. Snow loads are usually not a concern unless the roof is flat or there is a low slope. If there are large drifts on the roof, recommend investing in a roof rake. Home depot, Princess auto sell them for about $40. Pull the snow off the perimeter of the roof about 2 feet to reduce the risk of ice damming. As Greg states when the snow starts to melt, if it gets blocked at the roof edge it can back up under the singles and leak into the living space. You can reduce potential water damage in a quick thaw condition by following Greg's advise and using a roof rake to clear the snow off the roof.. It has a long pole so you do this from the ground. Never go onto a snow covered roof. For more information on ice damming visit cmhc.ca
