Shop Local, Rediscover Clarington! - Sheila Hall

January 29, 2009 - Updated: January 29, 2009

Now that the shopping season and holidays are behind us, and are anxious to see grass and green leaves, the message of the benefits of shopping local has not lost its importance.

As consumers in Clarington, we have the power to shape our community. The support of locally owned independent business influences our community by strengthening our economy and enhancing the character and appeal of our towns and villages. Taking advantage of the opportunities to re-discover and explore what Clarington has to offer is more important than ever.

A locally owned business returns much of each dollar to their community, through employment, purchasing of goods and services such as groceries, dining, gasoline, cars, homes, lawyers, banks, accountants and the list goes on. Chain and franchise stores also make a positive impact in our community through local employment and purchasing however, less of their earnings will remain in the community. Local retailers provide us with a unique selection of items, specially selected with their clientele in mind. Many have heavily invested their life savings into their business which has created a passion for the community and made them essential to charitable endeavours, team sponsorship and frequently sitting on local boards and supporting a variety of causes.

It is time to think twice about our spending habits and support our local business community as they have supported our social community for many years. Each one of us does make a difference.

Visit www.cbot.ca for more information on the Shop Local Campaign and each Shop Local participating business.

I could not agree with you more Sheila. One thing that I wished was included in the recent budget is an incentive to buy Canadian. I know with all the internation trade rules and anti tarif barriers the governments cannot do this but Just think of the effect if there were insentive for us to buy canadian. There are however none of these restrictions that we need to obide by as an individual. So make a differance and shop local. Shop in your local community, shop in Durham and buy Canadian.

Great post. We have made an effort to "buy Canadian" and to buy as much local as possible. We purchased a wall unit, made in Canada for that reason. Paid a bit more but it is well made.
