Preparing Your Home for Winter Travels - Greg Lewis

January 8, 2009 - Updated: January 8, 2009

Happy New-year to all! As we all move into a typical Canadian winter, thoughts of warmer Island retreats come to mind. Or maybe for the true Canadian a winter skiing or snowmobiling trip? Personally I look forward to catching some walleye through a frozen lake. Whatever it is that keeps you busy over the winter, planning properly for being away from home can be the most important part of planning a trip.

Some easy and helpful hints before you go away will make sure your trip is enjoyable and prevent you returning to your home with surprises.

Your first step should be to make sure your home appears occupied while you're away. Contact a family member, friend or trustworthy neighbour to help you. Have them shovel your driveway and front walks, and pickup any deliveries or papers that are delivered.

Get some automatic timers. They help by turning different lights on and off in different rooms at different times.

Notify your alarm company of your planned time away and give them a temporary contact person who can respond should there be any type of alarm. If you don't have an alarm, think of investing in one, you may get some of the costs back with a discount on your home insurance premiums!

Turn off the water and drain the system in your home. This prevents water damage from burst or frozen pipes. Always check your rubber lines to the washer and dryer as these are the most common to have cracks and burst.

And most importantly, have someone check on the home at least every 2 days while you are away. This can help keep your losses to a minimum if something does happen, and let you enjoy your holiday with peace of mind.

Wishing all a wildly successful 2009!

Doreen, Each insurance company has different rules around this and property insurance companies do not have standard policies like auto policies in Ontario. The short answer is read the policy as every company is different. And if you don't understand, ask. If your agent or broker is not helpful, find one that makes sure you understand all you want to in your policy!

Hi Greg: I'm a warm weather kind of gal myself! Quick question....a client of mine who owns a house in Courtice went away on vacation, did not have anyone looking after the house and had a burst water pipe. There was extensive damage but the insurance company would not cover it as they said that in order to establish a claim, she needed to have someone come in every 48 hours to check on the house while she was absent. Is this a provincial rule or does it only apply to the Region of Durham? Thanks, Doreen
