Hiring Local! - Greg Lewis

February 5, 2009 - Updated: February 5, 2009

I often wonder why people who live or who are moving to a community shop outside that community. Doesn't it make sense that the professionals in the area will be the most helpful and have the most knowledge in that area?

Just last week I saw a few new for sale signs go up with out of Durham region representatives and got thinking... what is the reasoning? Real estate agents with years of experience in this community know the market, know the buyers in this market, and can give you better results.

The same goes with insurance, mortgage brokers and lawyers too. Hiring a local professional will surely benefit you in all components of buying or selling your home. Maybe some of the local contributors can elaborate on the benefits they can provide in the industry they specialize in?

For insurance, a local representative can help in that they know the area, the fire stations, the streets, and possibly even the home already. They can also visit and inspect homes in a more timely fashion. This helps the consumer save valuable time and money as there may be more discounts available that a local representative can apply, given the experience in the area.

We all know that buying Canadian and shopping locally helps support the local economy and in turn helps us all. So remember, this applies not only to your daily shopping, but also to who you hire for all your professional needs as well.

Thank you to all of those who support the local economy, and remember to remind your friends and neighbours too!

I didn't know that insurance agents did site visits to properties. The last house I purchased was in the country and my insurance agent had so many questions (he was not located in the Durham Region) that I could not answer. I had to make an extra trip to the property (using up the only one I had) to supply him with information that he could have gotten himself if he was closer and could inspect the property himself. AND did I receive a discount for doing all the grunt work....not likely!

Greg, I so agree with you. By shopping local and hiring local we all win. Sometimes we do not think of the consequences for our actions. We just make snap decisions without thinking of the detrimental long term effects. We drive miles to do our shopping because that store is a little bit cheaper. Did the money that we save pay for the gas, wear and tear of the vehicle, stress caused by traveling as well as the longer term effect of taking the money out of our community or damaging the environment? I doubt it very much. Our household policy is to buy local where ever possible. This reminded me of a fascinating article from Toronto Star. You can read it at http://www.thestar.com/article/580076

You are so right Greg! A local agent knows about the community and can warn clients of things that they may not be aware of. They are able to answer questions about schools, shopping, transportation, new subdivisions, and many other important issues. Many agents do their clients a disservice by helping them look for a home in an area out of their expertise.
