Earth Day and blue boxes - Greg Lewis

April 23, 2009

Earth day was yesterday and got me thinking... why is it I still have neighbours that don't put out a blue box? Every garbage day I drive by 1 or 2 homes in my neighborhood that have obvious signs of cardboard boxes jammed into garbage bags! Can the municipality not refuse pickup of recyclables put out in the trash? Do these families not care about the impact on the environment and the planet they leave for both their children and mine?

Clarington now has a new schedule for garbage and recycling pickup, garbage will only be every 2 weeks and recycling is every week. This works great for my house as we always fill 2-3 blue boxes on a 2 week schedule. Now the garage doesn't get so backed up that they are picking it up weekly.

For some reason at the office they don't pickup the blue box when I leave it out front... problem solved, every Thursday night I collect the office recycling and bring it home... still put out 3-4 blue boxes every week.

Congratulations to one of my neighbours who on this new schedule put out their first blue box last week!

We will soon have to put the garbage out in clear bags. This has been happening in part s of Durham region. Clarington is now considering this option and i understand that it is coming very soon. The idea of the clear bag for the garbage is exactly what you are talking about. If your neibour carries out putting recyclable material in the garbage, it will not be picked up.
