Did you know that if your car is broken into the personal items that go missing fall under your homeowners/renters policy? Only damage to the car and items, that are attached to the car (CD Player/radio etc) are covered under your auto policy. The net result could be that you end filing 2 claims, 1 with your auto insurer and 1 with your home insurer. This could also mean 2 deductibles.
If more than just your property is stolen, i.e. a friend’s jacket or golf clubs, the coverage for their property falls under their insurance policy. Quite often folks find that the total value of the items is below the deductible or deductibles and end up not making a claim.
The lesson here is that you should never leave valuables in the car, if it happens to you, you may not be claiming the loss and replacing the items at your own cost.
If you absolutely must leave valuables in the car, hide them out of site or in the trunk.
